The DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter is an important resource to anyone interested in laserdiscs and DVD movies, but as of the time of this writing (October '98) there is not enough information on the web showing how to subscribe to it.

[Update, January '99: The DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter now has a web site -- www.dvdlaser.com. You can subscribe there, and read reviews for the last 4 years. When I get the time, I'll either revise or remove this page.]

The purpose of this page, then, is simply to show how to subscribe to the DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter. In addition, if you are interested in laserdiscs and DVD movies, but haven't heard of The DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter or aren't sure if you want it, this page will show you how to get a free (but old) sample issue.

The DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter is:

• The best resource for reviews of new laserdiscs and DVD movies. You will be amazed at how many titles are reviewed, and how thoroughly they are described so that you can really make intelligent decisions about what titles interest you. Of course, the reviews aren't simply about the movies themselves; they also (and more importantly) go into detail about technical details such as the quality of the transfer, whether it's letterboxed or pan & scan, what goodies (if any) are included other than the movie itself (such as the original trailer, interviews with the director & actors, etc.
• The best resource for finding rare laserdiscs:
  • You can place want (or sell) ads for 50¢/word. Your ad will reach most laserdisc aficionados -- and virtually all used/rare laserdisc dealers -- in North America. I'm really not sure if it plays a similar role in England, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • You can contact the used/rare laserdisc dealers across North America who advertise in it, asking them about that rare, obscure, long out-of-print laserdisc you're looking for.

The DVD-Laser Disc Newsletter has been in circulation since September 1984. An index of all laserdiscs and DVDs reviewed is available. All back issues -- all the way back to September '84 -- are also available.

The editor, Douglas Pratt, also has written a book, The 1995 Laser Video Disc Companion, (its 3rd edition), with all the reviews (over 8,000!) and a complete list of every laserdisc ever released in the USA.

Subscriptions to North American addresses are $14.95 for 5 months (5 issues), $35 for one year (12 issues), or $62.50 for two years. Outside North America, it's $50 for one year, $95 for two.

They take MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express. I'm not sure if they'll take a check; I'd suggest asking them before sending one.
